5-minute facial fitness: What is face yoga and how can it help us get a jawline?

In an era of fast fixes and cosmetic treatments, a new generation of natural beauty habits is on the rise — and it takes only five minutes a day. Social media websites are abuzz with short videos endorsing “face yoga,” which claims to lift and firm facial muscles without surgery or fillers.

One viral video shows an instructor performing a daily face-lifting regime, which the creator says will “restore your youthful jawline.” The technique, based on ancient traditions, merges specific facial exercises, lymphatic drainage massage, and conscious breathing to engage muscles and boost skin elasticity.

What is face yoga?

Face yoga is a sequence of facial exercises intended to tone the 43 facial muscles. As with regular exercise, physical activity can shape the body, so facial exercises are supposed to enhance blood flow, minimize swelling, and outline the face, especially the jawline, cheeks, and area under the eyes. Position your index and middle fingers in the middle of your chin. With gentle pressure, slide them upward along the jawline to your ears. Do 10 repetitions on each side.

Neck tightener

Lean back and gaze up at the ceiling. Press your lower jaw out to stretch the back of your neck. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times.

Cheek lifter

Smile big with lips closed. Use your fingertips to bring your cheeks up toward your eyes. Hold for 5 seconds, release, and do 10 repetitions.

Lymph drainage sweep

With your fingertips, sweep the skin gently from the middle of your face outwards — across your forehead, beneath the eyes, along the cheekbones, and down your neck — to stimulate lymph flow.

Brow smoother

Put your fingers side by side on your forehead. Pull the skin out slowly with your eyebrows. This tightens up the frontalis muscle and erases lines.
