Interior designer’s guide to decorating your home for Christmas

Trend Edit by Woodie’s launched earlier this year, a carefully selected range of the latest trends for your home. Bronagh Page, Woodie’s interior expert, shares some advice with us on decorating for Christmas.

According to Bronagh, decorating your home at Christmas time needn’t break the bank. It’s easy to freshen up your Christmas collection by bringing some new pieces home to tie in with this year’s trends.

Biophilic design

Biophilic design has become a huge trend in interior design in recent years and it works really well at Christmas time in particular – after all, evergreens, ferns and holly have long been associated with this time of year.

Introduce some greenery to your tablescape, over the fireplace or over a doorway for instant festive appeal. For a freshly picked look, spend time carefully fluffing out the wreath or garland to achieve a fuller feel.

You could add in a string of battery-operated fairy lights for some Christmas Sparkle or introduce some colour with a ribbon or even some baubles. It’s all about layering too, for a really full and luscious mantle don’t be afraid to double or triple your garlands – sweeping them to the side creates an understated but stylish look.

Autumnal pieces

If you’re on a budget, it can be nice to choose pieces that you can keep out long after Christmas day. The ‘Cosy Up’ trend for Autumn/Winter can bring a snuggly warmth to the living room that you’ll enjoy on darker evenings in January and February too.

Cushions, throws and rugs are a great way to bring different textures through for that cosy feel. There’s nothing like the warm glow coming from a candle, or the twinkle and sparkle from a set of fairy lights.

Colour scheme

Choosing a Christmas colour scheme helps to tie your decorating efforts together and give a cohesive look. It could be nice to use the anchor colour of the room as a guide, for example, in a living room with cool greys, silvers and whites could complement this nicely.

Deck the Halls: A timeless collection of warm reds and golds to evoke those fond memories of Christmas past.

Festive Woodland: Bring a rustic lustre to your winter wonderland this year with a range of gold and bronze tones

Dreaming of a White Christmas: Create a fabulous, frosted finish to your home this Christmas with bright whites, silvers ad pastel tones.

A personal theme

If you want to make your decorations more personal to you, ask yourself whether you’re a maximalist or a minimalist and go from there. Maybe it’s all about the sparkles and bright colours for you – with twinkling-coloured lights and bright baubles. Or perhaps your theme is more understated – warm white lights and some minimalist ornaments.

It’s important to assess the space you’re decorating before you begin. For example, if you have a small hallway you may want to keep any decorations here feeling minimal and let the Christmas tree in the living room be the showstopper!

The dinner table is a great space to introduce some festive sparkle. Wow your guests with a set of gold cutlery and get some kudos as the host with the most with a Christmas cracker at each place setting.

Finally, bring some festive cheer to your outdoor space with outdoor lights. Choose from silhouettes, sparkling icicle lights or even Christmas projectors!

Most importantly – have fun with your decorations and let your personality shine through. Let’s make Christmas Sparkle!
