Between Tuxes and Tracksuits! Men’s Fashion Tips

Men’s fashion this semester is sorted. Find some helpful insights on styling, and breakdowns of trending aesthetics for guys, in this piece by Anastasia Glushchenko.

It’s finally the moment they take off their secondary school uniform for the last time. The lads are commuting to Belfield for class, and they now have to find their style! Not so dramatic as to wear a tux to their lectures, but more formal than a Nike tech tracksuit, college style is all about finding the middle ground; it’s where boys transition their style towards that of a young man. With so many aesthetics out there to choose from, here are just a few you could try out…

Old Money: Subtle, polished and timeless, while you might think Ralph Lauren is out of a college student’s price range, Depop and Vinted help to make these luxurious garments affordable! Paired over a polo or a button-up shirt, swap chinos and loafers for jeans and runners to bring a casual level to this classy look. Accessories could include a watch, or a leather belt. In 2025, this look would suit soft pastels or regal tones with rich colours such as navy or red.

Granola Core: A complete other end of the spectrum, this aesthetic embraces rugged and rough, think Carhartt jackets, durable cargos and a battered flat brim cap you’ve had for years. It’s the uniform for the guy who lives outdoors, be that hiking, climbing or camping. Layer this aesthetic with a quarter zip from Patagonia, wool beanie, and a pair of leather boots, you’re ready to hit the climbing wall! The key to this aesthetic is earthy tones and well-worn pieces. You can make Granola Core your own, even if the furthest you’re hiking is from Merville to the Sports Centre.

90s Streetwear: Oversized tees, baggy jeans, belts, and your finest Pelador jumper is what you’re looking for to take on the big smoke. Layer on a gilet and a pair of sambas and you’ve nailed the look. On hotter days, jorts from your summer wardrobe could make a reappearance. This outfit can be elevated with a flannel or oversized denim jacket. Think Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio in the nineties, with so many pieces reminiscent of their style to be found in second-hand shops or on reselling apps.

Coastal Grandpa: Though often confused with old money, coastal grandpa is more laid-back. Vibrant and cosy it can be assembled with vintage pieces, including fun sweaters, deck shoes or Birks, with either linen trousers for milder days, or corduroy slacks for the cold. Layers are important for this style, so finish off the look with a chunky Aran jumper, and you’re ready to sail off into the sunset.

These are just a few tips on how to find your vibe and look cool this college year. At the end of the day, style is all about what makes you happy, and helps you be the most confident and comfy version of you! There is so much inspiration out there and millions of outfit ideas on Insta, TikTok, or Pinterest. Mix and match these aesthetics to your heart’s content, and remember to find durable and sustainable pieces, through thrifting, vintage shops, or even small designers.
