8 Top-Notch Layering Tips So You’re Ready for Any Temperature

Right this way for effortless, practical style!

There’s nothing more frustrating than leaving your house fully bundled up in the morning, only to find yourself profusely sweating a few hours later in a thick sweater with no layers to shed. Alternatively, no one likes to be left shivering without a jacket when the temperatures drop at night.

Plus, depending on where you’re located, the weather can fluctuate 20 to 30 degrees or more throughout the day, which means you’ve got to be prepared for it all. Today, we’ve got the answers to your style needs because layering, when done right, will ensure you’re always dressed for the elements without sacrificing comfort or style. We also spoke to two fashion experts and got their top tips and tricks you can count on. Scroll on, take notes, and you’ll be prepared for whatever weather comes your way!

1. A Moisture-Wicking Base Layer

To help regulate body temperature, celebrity style expert Melissa Rivers recommends wearing a snug base layer like thermal or wool. If you ask us, merino wool is ideal because it’s naturally soft and resistant to odor-causing bacteria.

2. Don’t Miss the Midd;e

The middle layer is important as it provides insulation and helps you retain heat on a cold day. “Make sure it’s something easy to remove in case you get too hot,” Rivers adds.

3. Go With a Weatherproof Jacket

A weatherproof jacket is a must. When dressing up, opt for a wool or faux fur coat. Cropped puffers are also a major trend and go with just about anything, from jeans to activewear. “It has to be durable and breathable and aligns with the weather conditions, whether it’s rain, snow, or wind,” Rivers suggests.

4. Build Your Basics

“Curating a closet of essential, versatile, and timeless items that can be mixed and matched for various occasions is the easiest way to simplify layering,” says Stitch Fix stylist Molly Roe. “These items include classic pieces like a cozy knit sweater, an oversized blazer, and straight-leg denim. When worn together, they can be dressed up with bold accessories, like a colorful heeled bootie, or styled more casually for a day of errand running by wearing with your favorite comfy sneakers.”

5. Don’t Overlook Accessories

Cozy accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves are musts that elevate any look. “Accessories are the easiest layers to add on or remove,” Roe notes. They’re also the perfect way to let your personal style shine!

6. Know Your Body

There’s always that one person in the group who’s wearing a t-shirt when everyone’s bundled up, so think about your personal preferences and whether you run hot or cold. Just remember, though, it’s always easier to shed layers than not be wearing enough when it’s chilly out.

7. Avoid Cold Feet

“When it’s really cold, put on a pair of warm wool socks to keep toes toasty even if they get wet,” advises Rivers. “Don’t bulk up with multiple layers of cotton socks. Instead, stick with one durable pair.”

8. Consider the Occasion

“A casual setting may allow for a more relaxed approach, while a formal event requires a more polished look,” shares Rivers. That said, take into account where you’re headed. Layering for a hike outdoors is different from what you’d wear to a holiday party.
