9 Tips You Definitely Need To Know Before Trying Glitter Makeup

Glitter is both beautiful and scary. It will scratch your face whilst making it twinkle like a star and that’s why, despite it being a bit of a pain, we all gravitate towards it. So, if you’re a fan of shiny things and are looking to jazz up your face with some sparkle, you need to read our glitter makeup tips on trying, buying, applying, and removing glitter makeup, so that you don’t go into this adventure unprepared!

1. First, ask yourself if you even need glitter

Most of the time when we opt for glitter, it is to get a sparkly look. What we don’t realise is that the lack of uniformity in the sheen of these particles actually gives a frosty look, which aren’t the shiniest or most seamlessly reflective. Many shimmer sticks and metallic shadows are way more shiny than glitter, and half the hassle.

2. Educate yourself about the different types of glitter products in makeup

If you must buy glitter, figure out what kind of product would best suit your needs, and make sure you buy glitter meant for the face! If you want to create a glitter eyeshadow look, you can buy pressed glitter in eyeshadow form. If you want to apply glitter liner to adorn your cut-crease, buy glitter eyeliner. But, most importantly, don’t start with loose glitter or buy tonnes of glitter pigment if you’re new to this, just because your favourite YouTube makeup artist does so. It is a mess to work with and can fall out everywhere.

3. Glitter isn’t for sensitive eyes

Glitter can scratch your cornea if it gets into your eyes, so it’s not meant for the area, especially not if you wear contacts. But, even apart from this, the skin around the eyes is thin, so glitter can feel scratchy and be abrasive, especially if you’re not careful at the time of removal.

4. Use glitter base

An eye primer will not suffice when it comes to holding glitter. It is, therefore, best to use glitter glue or glitter base as an adhesive to catch the particles. This not only helps the glitter stick better, but when you apply the glue to a demarcated area, the glitter only sticks there and doesn’t go everywhere, giving you a neater look.

There are different ways to use glitter bases, and these products usually come with instructions. Some are meant to be applied on the lid, and then the glitter is meant to be packed on top. For a few, you need to apply the glue to a brush, and then dip the brush into the glitter to pick it up. For best results, be quick in your application so that the glitter doesn’t stick to the brush or your finger. You might also need to apply more base or glue to the brush for better stickiness.

5. Instead of rubbing glitter on, pat and press it

Glitter must always be pressed on to prevent bald patches. If you rub or swipe on glitter the way you do shimmer shadows, your lids will get scratched and your glitter application an uneven mess. Instead, pat on the colour on top of glitter glue with dry fingers. You also need to pick up more glitter after each pat so that a decent amount goes on, so don’t try to stingily drag around what you picked up the first time.

6. Protect your undereyes with patches or tape

NEVER apply glitter eye makeup without protection, unless you want to go for a Coachella look with a face full of glitter. Use tape under your eyes to prevent glitter from falling onto your under eyes. You can also use this as a chance to pamper yourself with some under-eye patches! Just remember: keep the adjacent areas covered!

7. Do your face makeup after applying glitter

An extension of the previous tip, this no-brainer needs reiteration. Do not do a full face of makeup and then complain when glitter falls out all over it. Do your glitter makeup first, clean up any messes around the area, and then do the rest of your makeup.

8. Mixing glitter is a bad idea

Mixing two different types of glitter is not just a bad idea because you shouldn’t try to layer glitter, but also because mixing shimmers can look dirty and messy unless the colours are really similar.

9. Tape is the only way to remove it

Just the way you use a wax strip to remove hair, you need to use strips of tape to pick up glitter and remove it. After doing this, you can proceed with your usual double cleanse.
