The Best Tips and Tricks to Decorate Your Balcony

In the post-pandemic world, people have started spending even more time than ever at home. If you live in an apartment, your balcony is probably your only window to the outside world. Balconies have also become key spaces used for multiple purposes such as meditation, workout, home office, and gardens from where you can enjoy the sunrise and sunset, or simply as an extension of family lounges and bedrooms to better utilise the space.

Palash Agrawal, Chief Product Designer, Vedas Exports, says, “Whatever the purpose, it is beyond doubt that balconies have become a style statement and are no longer the part of the house used only to place outdoor air-conditioning units or store little used/unused items.”

Keeping evolving trends in mind, Palash shares a curated style guide that will help you redecorate your balcony space, and make it a place to be cherished by you and admired by your guests.

Colours
Just like the rest of the interiors, the balcony should be ideally decorated with colour elements that bring out vibrancy, joy, peace, and energy. Sunshine gold, soft green, pastels, and soft hues of blue are among the best options to paint the balcony walls, alongside the all-time favourite whites. Alternatively, a combination of contrasting colours might also be great idea.

“If you don’t wish to go all out redecorating the balcony and want to apply minimal touches that can transform the ambience, then you should go for multi-coloured cushions that can add the right dash of colour and playfulness without costing much,” suggests Palash.

Vases
Vases have once again become an item fancied by the modern generation. You can choose from a diverse range of options. If the idea is to go classy, elegant or to make your balcony a prayer and meditation space, then intricately designed metal vases in silver or golden colours with jaali work can be a great idea. Palash adds, “India is the land of handicrafts, and you can find plenty of great options in copper, brass and other metallic combinations, and sizes as per your preferences. Complementing these with similar metallic tea-light holders, statues, wall hangings, and other such exquisite handcrafted decorative pieces would quickly help you turn the balcony into a royal jharokha.”

Lighting
Good old fairy-lights have emerged as an integral part of any balcony décor these days. They take almost no time to install, and can add the desired touch. Add golden lights to create the feel of a starry sky, green to enhance the look of the plants, or white, soft white and blue to add a peaceful vibe. Alternatively, there are options like red or neon LED string and strip lights to create a happening party space.

Biophilia
Plants are probably the most trending element when it comes to balcony décor. “Everyone wants a balcony garden, and a combination of leafy lush green plants such as crotons, areca palm, pothos, and diverse flowering and non-flowering creepers are ideal for a quick, low maintenance balcony garden,” says Palash.

If the balcony space is sun-facing, then it is easy to add a variety of flowering plants and make the entire space colourful and vibrant. Sunflowers, marigold, roses, hibiscus and petunias bloom in spring/summer, and in winter, there are options such as pansies, calendula, dahlia, dianthus, aster, carnation, etc. A number of air purifying and medicinal plants can also be added to make the space not only look great, but benefit your health as well.

Décor Pieces
Handcrafted floral motifs or metallic figurines of animals or humans dancing or playing musical instruments are great add-ons to enhance the ambience if you are looking at creating a party space or a lounge. For balcony garden lovers, adding ready to install or DIY fountains, fairy garden diorama, and solar/water powered lights, hidden Bluetooth speakers to play desired rain, birds, natural sounds, flute music or meditation music, etc. can complement the ambience perfectly.

There are limitless options to decorate your balcony depending upon budget, preferences, and time. Above all, what you need is a creative mind to visualise how you want the space to be. If you are not able to spare time procuring the right items or conceptualising the space, then you can let an interior designer take over the transformation. So, go ahead and enjoy the views from the balcony that you’ve always wanted!
